I will write more at length at some point, but I was inspired by some of Donato Giancola's work to try a slightly aerial perspective and some interesting lighting. The 'affair' story sort of developed as I played around with poses and the 'palace' part happened during the sketch phase.

Interesting note: I painted nearly the whole thing upside down from the way I finally decided to show it. *UPDATE* Then at a show in 2010 someone asked me to turn it back!
The underpainting is...disconcerting. I don't think of something like this with its flowing lines being on a grid, but WOW. I thought it was a photo from the thumbnail, you've captured such an unusual pair of poses at this angle, with glorious color. It looks less surreal upside down (yes I flipped my laptop) but the way you have it oriented now seems to hint more strongly of the implications of the title. Nice job!
nice skin colors, the angle... and well, the material! can't believe people still uses oil, i'm so happy to see this kind of images!
