"A Palace Affair" 2009 Oil on wood panel

I will write more at length at some point, but I was inspired by some of Donato Giancola's work to try a slightly aerial perspective and some interesting lighting. The 'affair' story sort of developed as I played around with poses and the 'palace' part happened during the sketch phase.

This is the original transfer sketch onto the panel (gridded):

Interesting note: I painted nearly the whole thing upside down from the way I finally decided to show it. *UPDATE* Then at a show in 2010 someone asked me to turn it back!

Part of the underpainting:

Also interesting, I did all the planning for the painting digitally. Oddly, this is one of the first times I've done that.

The underpainting is...disconcerting. I don't think of something like this with its flowing lines being on a grid, but WOW. I thought it was a photo from the thumbnail, you've captured such an unusual pair of poses at this angle, with glorious color. It looks less surreal upside down (yes I flipped my laptop) but the way you have it oriented now seems to hint more strongly of the implications of the title. Nice job!
