Firstly, before I begin my short-winded explanation of the concept & symbolism, I'd like to give some due credit. This was originally intended to be a photomanipulation piece, but I couldn't seem to gather the correct pieces to take my own photos (at least not without spending hundreds of dollars), so I collected a few references. The door frame, for example, was based on a photo of a window frame in my studio (thank you to the termites & New England weather for the excellent textures). The red dress is a problem I've been trying to solve for months. I went on so many different websites and even to various clothing shoppes looking for the perfect one, but couldn't find it. So I finally resorted to digging thru some runway photos from magazines & the internet, then changing it all up into an original gown. Next and foremost, I have to give credit to *arcipello's infinitely awesome and popular painting "Broken Dawn" for inspiration on the cityscape (If you haven't seen it yet, it's a top favorite in the digital painting>fantasy gallery). I must've tried 3 or 4 different photos I took of New Haven before realizing I couldn't achieve the depth I wanted, so I ended up drawing the final one by hand in a similar fashion to *arcipello's piece. I needed to make the figure look like me (I'll get into that later) so I shot a photo of myself to use. All that said, I think this is the single most photo-reliant work of mine ever, but I'm pleased with the outcome.
As for the concept, it's one that's been stewing in my brain for almost a year, and is heavily related to my music. "A Concrete Place" is actually slated to be the title of my next CD, and I may use this as its main artwork, but more than that it's a vision of a surreal place I've had in recurring dreams since I was a child. The place just doesn't make sense. It's an illusion of an agora (or more succinctly, freedom), within a very shallow space. For those that actually want to hear the song of the same name, it's on myspace. I think that might actually do a better job of explaining it than I can.
